CHICAGO—“Outstanding, amazing, awesome.” These were the descriptions that Mr. Diaz, the owner of a limousine company and his wife, a teacher, gave the Divine Performing Arts (DPA) after seeing the show on Dec. 27 in Chicago. Part of DPA’s 80-city world tour this season, its New York Company is presenting three shows in the city’s renowned Civic Opera House during the weekend. To customer service representative Ms. Montanec, it is easy to comment on DPA’s show: “The performance was divine, just like the name is.” She thought that the show was very touching. “Basically [the dancers’] hand movements, their body movements, the projection that they had in their face ... every single movement that they made delivers an emotional feeling within ... every single movement had a message.” Physicians Bapu and Vijay Arekapudi, who go to the Civil Opera House eight times a year, also found the DPA phenomenal. They liked the dances a lot, especially Persecuted on a Sacred Path, which portrays the story of a Falun Gong practitioner being tortured to death by the Chinese Communist regime, but rewarded by heaven in the end. Mr. Arekapudi thinks that freedom of expression and freedom of spirit is very important, and that the Chinese regime should accept the diversity of people’s different ideas. “I am not a religious man,” he claims, “but I defend the people who like to believe what they want.” He states that China needs to change, and that it would be a great success for Chinese people if they could one day have freedom. Ms. Paulos, a nurse, holds the same opinion as Mr. Arekapudi. What struck her the most was the inspiration in "Persecuted on a Sacred Path" that there is hope for good things to come, no matter how horrible the current situation is. Although her seat was not far from the stage, she brought her opera glass to the show so that she could catch all the details of the performance. Her son is a musician in New York and she said that she would go there to see the show again with him. Her friend Ms. Levy, a retired neuroscience professor, loved Flowing Sleeves, Rest in Knowing, Hesitate No Longer, and Hope. She felt the performances was profound, from the costume design to the composition of the songs. The Epoch Times is a proud sponsor of the Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour. CHICAGO—Mr. E. Moore, the Cook County Recorder of Deeds, wanted to attend DPA Sunday afternoon in Chicago to see other cultures and enjoy himself.
He learned that all cultures have rhythm. “The dancing, the colorful costumes—it’s those things that are going to pull people together. The music, the dance—I enjoyed it all!” He also mentioned the Chinese drumming and the lady playing the grand piano as being key to making the western and Chinese instruments blend well together. “Dance of the Snow Capped Mountain” a piece with Tibetan dance really stuck out for him as a memorable part. Retired medical journalist Ms. Sandell and her daughter Ms. Blank, a church volunteer, were glad that they saw Divine Performing Arts (DPA) 2009 World Tour. They said it opened their eyes. They especially liked the orchestra, the vocalists, and the costumes. They thought the show was wonderful because they learned a lot about Chinese culture from it. “I have so many questions about the history that has created this performance,” said Ms. Blank. “I hope I can do some research, perhaps on the internet, to learn more about what I’ve seen.” At first, they were reserved about supporting DPA, because they knew that there is a lot of oppression in China. Finding out that the DPA is based in New York and that it has no relation with the Chinese government, their hearts were put at ease.
They were amazed to see that the show reflects the current situation of the people in China. They thought that the company’s message that people should be aware of what is happening in China was projected very well in the dances that portray the Chinese government’s persecution of Falun Dafa because they could feel that “the performance is coming from the hearts of the group.” The Epoch Times is a proud sponsor of the Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour. ( December 27 Visiting Scholar from Mainland: Divine Culture Unveils Ultimate QuestionVisiting Scholar from Mainland: Divine Culture Unveils Ultimate QuestionBy Song Jie

Chinese Immigrant Discovers New Sense of Freedom Watching DPABy Zhang Leyao
Epoch Times Dec 25, 2008
HOUSTON—On the evening of December 22, Divine Performing Arts awed audiences with its first showing at Houston’s Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. Chinese audience from both mainland China and Texas highly praised the performance, exclaiming that they have never seen such an amazing show before. The three praised the program, describing it as fresh and touching. Mr. Wen described the sense of freshness and freedom that he felt while watching the DPA performance as something more intense than what he felt when he first immigrated to the United States. “This is a type of freshness that I have never had experienced before. It is the type of freedom that sheds all chains and shackles, and provides a relaxed feeling,” said Mr. Wen. “This kind of performance can’t be seen anywhere else in America or China.” Mr. Wen’s wife, who had been living in the United States for over five years, emotionally said, “Tonight’s performance was truly splendid—splendid isn’t even enough to describe it. These artists are so outstanding, contained, and refined. Even just looking at them makes me feel comfortable and pure.” Mr. Wen’s friend said that there are greatly talented people in mainland China, but they are subject to the imprisonment of the Communist Party’s culture and are deprived of freedom of creativity. He continued to say that the artists’ creativity, skills, and intelligence have been drowned by the degeneration of the human spirit and morals. “If it continues like this, all the arts programs in mainland [China] will fall to the level of the Spring Festival show—something that is good-for-nothing, materialistic, and lacks spirituality. Such things only serve to pollute whoever watches them,” said Wen’s friend. “I believe that tonight’s performance can move people mainly because these performers are different. Undoubtedly, their artistic achievements and techniques are world-class, but more importantly, their hearts are noble and pure—this is the culture of Chinese people.” Read this article in the originals Chinese: http://shenyun.epochtimes.com/gb/8/12/23/n2372899.htm Last Updated Dec 25, 2008 http://en.epochtimes.com/n2/arts-entertainment/chinese-immigrant-freedom-dpa-9115.html December 26 【人生感悟】忠言逆耳而利于行

December 25 Philadelphia: "I Am Proud of Being Chinese"Philadelphia: "I Am Proud of Being Chinese" Mr. Zhao: "It is better than I expected. Everything is traditional." By Minghui/Clearwisdom reporter Zheng Haishan
On December 20, Divine Performing Arts (DPA) held the second show of the 2009 world tour in Philadelphia. During the intermission, Mr. Zhao, a Chinese living in Philadelphia, told the reporter how much he and his daughter loved the show.
Mr. Zhao said, "I've heard about DPA before, but I didn't think they were this good." He brought his daughter to show because she was born in the U.S.A., and he wants her to know more about Chinese culture. "On the way to the theater, my daughter kept asking what kind of show it would be. I told her to find out for herself. Actually I didn't know either," Mr. Zhao said.
"It is better than I expected. The costumes, music and dance were all traditional. It is my first time to see such a large-scale show in America. The show is excellent. I've seen shows by performing arts groups from China, but none of them can be compared to this one," said Mr. Zhao.
Mr. Zhao likes art. He said "We are losing the traditional stuff in China. People cannot appreciate the traditional arts, nor do they know about them very well. This show demonstrated our 5000-year-old culture. I asked my daughter, 'Aren't you proud of being a Chinese?' The U.S.A. only has a 200-year-old history, but our ancestors had such beautiful culture several thousand years ago."
"I am proud of my culture," said Angela Zhao.
Angela Zhao, Mr. Zhao's 10-year-old daughter, was born and grew up in America. She was amazed by the show. "It is lively. I am proud of being a Chinese," she said.
Mr. Zhao believes that show is attractive to Westerners too. "It is great that Americans and Chinese kids, who grew up here, can learn about China through the show. Some of them knew nothing about the Chinese culture. They will be amazed once they see it," he said.
Mr. Zhao is a Christian. He said, "My belief is different than Falun Gong. But it doesn't matter. Everybody should have freedom of belief." He added, "Christianity, Catholicism, and Falun Gong are all very different from Communism. We are far away from Communism."
Mr. Zhao is a leader in the local Chinese community. He said that he would recommend this show to his Chinese friends. http://www.divineshows.com/philadelphia/audience-testimonial/philadelphia-i-am-proud-being-chinese?

CINCINNATI—Dr. Rudnick, the Artistic Director of a performing arts school in Cincinnati, attended the Divine Performing Arts show in Cincinnati on Dec. 23, and was effusive in his praise: "It’s a beautiful show. Beautiful. It’s marvelous combination of dance, drama, music, beautiful scenes, costumes. Exceptionally well done.” Dr. Rudnick is a nationally recognized music educator, conductor, composer and performer. He brought a lot of his students to see the show and was “very, very glad” that he did. "This is a wonderful introduction to Americans on Chinese culture, tradition, stories, mythology. I think that seeing the show we all come away with such a greater appreciation for traditional Chinese culture, in music, and songs, and all the artists, from the choreographer, the singers, the dancers…. [It is] really performed on a really high level." Beauty in simplicity"It kind of gets me in touch with some more traditional roots. I am a composer and musician. I love the sound of those Chinese folk melodies. I’m thinking about maybe even working on a piece, using some of that Chinese folk melodies based on pentatonic scales, beautiful simple scales but with a lot of emotional power. There’s a simplicity of getting back to this idea of simplicity and elegance that’s present in this marvelous performance that can inspire professional artists like myself. Sometimes in working with a lot of the modern groups, it tends to be very complicated. Things get very complicated. We have fancy instruments and complicated electronics and things like that. But it’s great to go back to simple kinds of ideas and simple forms like Chinese folk melodies. Beautiful! Beautiful! They give us new ideas and new ways of thinking of things." Dr. Rudnick said the orchestral music fascinating: “Combining the western instruments, and some western harmony, with Chinese folk melodies, and with the pipa and the erhu. A gorgeous, gorgeous combination. In fact, I must say that I was surprised how beautifully it fit all together. It made perfect sense, beautifully, beautifully together." Universal message
"The show’s message is incredibly powerful. We were just commenting with friends of mine here that it’s a message of hope and peace. Heaven knows that we need it in the world today. In fact we all came out of the performance just almost feeling like we were soothed. It was very soothing, very reassuring, soothing." "A wonderfully positive message. A message that we don’t often get in America, at least when we come to these cultural events. It’s all about a specific event, a specific composer, and a specific performance. This had an even greater message, a universal message of peace, brotherhood, harmony, and that only added to the beautiful elegance of the entire evening. Universal appeal
"I just think it’s a marvelous performance and a marvelous production." "Everything was beautifully performed. Very well timed. Beautiful movement from the dancers. Everything was very very well done. Perfectly in sync. The musicians played beautifully. Just a wonderful collaboration of bringing so many different art forms together. That’s what I like most about the show. It brings so many wonderful traditional Chinese art forms together, but kind of puts in in a package that an American audience can really appreciate." "There is an inner kind of philosophy that comes out in these dance moves and in the choreography. It’s really really wonderful. I personally appreciate it. And there really is an inner story in the outer movements." Beautiful costumes and backgrounds"Beautiful! Beautiful! I really appreciate it! The silk costumes. I appreciate it. The way the costumes were put together. Just very elegant, very beautiful, in a way that did not inhibit the movement of the dancers and the singers." "Beautiful images projected onto the stage but in a large format, larger than I’ve seen with a lot of productions. In fact I’m going to take some wonderful examples that I’ve seen here tonight and bring it back to my art school." Spectacular communication and collaboration
"This was such a great opportunity for American audiences and modern performers, modern dancers. They look at this, and they can get some wonderful ideas: 'Wow! There is a traditional Chinese culture of dance and song here, especially when blended with a few western elements, that can give us a whole new idea of pursuing some kind of cultural collaboration.'" "I think one of the fascinating things about our age is that there’s communication. We get this opportunity to see these wonderful traditional Chinese elements, and to combine them with some of the western elements. And because there’s such a communication in borrowing and lending of ideas now, it really is a spectacular way to bring some of the fantastic elements of Chinese culture into American society. And if you saw the audience members here this evening, you saw that most of them were not of Chinese background. "It is marvelous to see an event in Music Hall with so many young people who came to see this performance and were just fascinated. They were enthralled." "As an artistic director, I feel that cultural opportunities especially for our young people, cultural opportunities that are appropriate in educational, in inspiring and motivating young people. It’s so important to have that. The ability to get an insight and to see another culture, and to get kind of a quick 5000-year history of Chinese culture in a beautiful presentation like this is phenomenal. It’s absolutely phenomenal. We need more of this." The Epoch Times is a proud sponsor of the Divine Performing Arts 2009 World Tour. CINCINNATI—As an ice storm was raging in Ohio, the audience in the Cincinnati Music Hall found themselves on the spring grass of China. Their tour guide: Divine Performing Arts New York Company. Despite the bad weather, Mr. Jones was sitting in the theater 30 minutes before the show started. Proud of being able to get a ticket in the middle of the front row, he thought of it as a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the Divine Performing Arts dancers perform in such beautiful costumes. The costumes were “a work of art in themselves”, he said. The president of a Ballet association in Cincinnati, Ms. Gentry-Davis enjoyed the dances, especially The Mystical Phoenix. She was amazed by the acrobatic nature of the dances, and was surprised to to learn so much about Chinese culture and its spirituality during the show. Humanities professor Ms. Fitzgibbons was impressed by the authenticity of the show. She appreciated the emcees’ historic introduction to the performances, especially when they were speaking in Chinese. “I like the sound of the Chinese language,” she explained. This show brought old acquaintances together. While being interviewed after the show, inventor of the Heimlich maneuver, Dr. H. J. Heimlich, met his old friend Ms. Barksdale, a gospel singer. Ms. Barksdale commented on the soprano and tenor’s vibrant voices, and on the dancers moving so smoothly, as if they “didn’t have a bone in their bodies.” Dr. Heimlich said that he liked Majestic and Compassionate, a piece that presents a Falun Gong practitioner’s compassion. Majestic and Compassionate was not alone in carrying messages about the divine. Various other performance pieces, such as The Udumbara’s Bloom and Knowing the True Picture Offers Ultimate Hope, gave the audience the warmth to face the cold winds outside the theater.
